Article: Teacher Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Training Date: 25-28 December 2009 Location: Wolaita Zone, Ethiopia
LCD Ethiopia has recently facilitated the first teacher training workshops of the Woreda School Improvement Project in partnership with Damot Gale and Bolosso Sore Woreda Education Offices (WEO). Two rounds of workshops were held. Training in core subject areas for first cycle elementary school teachers (grades 1-4) took place from the 25th to 28th December 2009. The training in English across the curriculum for second cycle teachers (grades 1-8) was held from the 1st to 4th January 2010. Each training workshop was attended by two teachers from each of the 65 target schools in phase one of the Woreda School Improvement Project.
Feedback from participants was 100% positive. Participants particularly appreciated the direct relevance of the training to the everyday work of the teachers and for its innovative participatory methodology. A request for more and longer training was a part of almost all the comments, with some asking for the training to be given to all the teachers. Some of the comments said that the training was a turning point in their lives and many said they had never acquired as much knowledge in their years at teacher training institutions.
As with all of LCD’s work, we look to implement our work on a wider scale. So it was extremely positive when both woreda and zone officials expressed the need to replicate LCD’s work. Their offer to fund this from Government budget was particularly encouraging. The Bolosso Sore WEO Head said that he had 5,000 Birr, which he wanted to use with LCD to give more training to his office staff, while the Zone Education Department attendants requested that at least one participant from all the Wolaita woredas attend future training with the zone covering their costs.
2010 should provide us with opportunities to reflect upon and implement new ideas for up-scaling our work.
