Article: LCD Teacher Training Ethiopia

Article: Final round of LCD Teacher Training takes place, Ethiopia
Date: 9-12 April 2010
Location: Boditti & Areka, Ethiopia
Participants at an LCD teacher training session in Ethiopia
Link Community Development Ethiopia recently delivered the final round of teacher training for the academic year 2009/10.  Training took place in the towns of Boditti and Areka.  Over 140 participants - composed of teachers, supervisors and regional education staff took part and feedback showed that it was a resounding success among the participants.

The session began with teachers being given an opportunity to feedback about the ways they had been able to incorporate learning from the first 2 training sessions into their teaching styles and lessons. They felt that this had lead to their students becoming more attentive, enthusiastic and punctual in getting to class.  One teacher stated that she had found the training to be more like a spiritual training in the art and science of teaching.  This enthusiasm and support was also reflected by the government regional education bureau officials who gave equally encouraging comments. Their commitment to LCD Ethiopia’s work was generously demonstrated as they allowed LCD staff to use the city administration meeting hall free of charge for the final training session.

The 2-day training session covered the following topics:
  • testing and evaluation,
  • student-centred methodology,
  • materials production,
  • action research,
  • and how to enhance individual and group work in line with school improvement reports and the collective needs of the school. Bubble demo during teacher training in Ethiopia
Once again, the trainees feedback was excellent saying they were “enchanted by the insights into their profession” and “stimulated by the exciting techniques to teach literacy, numeracy and science, like card tricks, bouncing eggs and bubbles that don’t burst”! One comment read, “Such training should be mandatory for all teachers as it captures the essence of teaching.”

During a final review session many trainees expressed their eagerness to undertake the next round of the training.
