Article: LCD co-facilitate School Improvement Conference Date: 15 November 2009 Location: Wolaita Zone, Ethiopia
LCD co-facilitated the first ever School Improvement Conference in partnership with Wolaita Zone Education Department on 15th November 2009. The aims of the conference were to provide a platform for the woredas and their elementary schools to engage openly on the performance of schools in the zone, to present the School Improvement Programme data from 2009, enable woredas to platform successes/challenges through the presentation of relevant case studies and for everyone to know each other as stakeholders and practitioners of education in the zone.
The conference was a huge success. Almost 300 stakeholders participated, including 100% attendance of the Education Heads and Heads of Quality Assurance from all woredas in Wolaita Zone. This will greatly assist our efforts to upscale project learning beyond our initial two target woredas. Both the Zone Head and the Zone Administrator had nothing but praise for LCD’s approach and strongly endorsed our evidence-based approach to school planning. As well as two woreda overviews the conference included case studies from school and cluster level in Bolosso Sore and Damot Gale and two very lively open discussion sessions. All the other woredas now want to do the data collection, which is a good starting point for working with the zone around potential replication. All in all it was a brilliant event and has laid good groundwork for the second cycle of the School Improvement Programme in 2010.
