One of the most exciting areas of LCD’s work in Ethiopia is the community-based School Performance Appraisal Meetings at which parents, local residents and representatives of women's associations, farmers groups, youth associations gather together for a presentation of that school’s learner test results and that school’s rankings against the Ministry of Education’s School Improvement indicators.
This year alone, during May and June 2011 LCD created the opportunity for over 11,500 community members and parents to sit down and focus on education and on what they can do collectively and individually to improve the situation for their children.
The SIP rankings are assessed during comprehensive and participatory data collection in every school, facilitated by LCD and conducted by the woreda education officials. The meetings are a unique opportunity for community members to hold teachers, school directors and woreda level service providers accountable for the quality of education their children receive. They provide a platform for parents to be directly involved with evaluating school strengths and weaknesses and setting targets for improvement.
