Cairo to Cape Town Challenge

Cairo to Cape Town Challenge 2010
The Cairo to Cape Town Challenge 2010 involved 22 schools embarking on an ambitious virtual journey from Cairo to Cape Town!

Schools participated in fundraising activities such as sports’ days, cake sales and no-uniform days. For every €10 raised, they progressed 10km along the route from Cairo to Cape Town, using the Interactive Map of Africa provided by Link Community Development. In 2010, all the materials for the event were available in both English and Irish, making it of particular interest to Gaelscoileanna, Gaelcholaisti and Irish language groups or businesses. The event is suitable for any school group, and fits particularly well with Transition Year modules and CSPE Action Projects, contributing to students' learning on global citizenship.

Each year, LCD Ireland uses their massive master map to calculate the distance covered by all groups together. The aim is to reach Cape Town on this master map, meaning that groups across Ireland will have travelled 15,000km and raised €30,000 for Link Community Development’s work improving education and health services in rural African communities.

Our 2010 flagship event was held in Rathdown Secondary School in County Dublin, and included drumming workshops and music by Niwel Tsumbu, Congolese/Irish musician, and development education activities lead by the Link Ireland team. Thank you to Niwel, and to Nuno Reis Goncalves, the photographer on the day.

A big thank you to the staff and students of Rathdown School for welcoming us and for participating so enthusiastically!
