Last summer, eight Global Teachers spent five weeks in Kamwenge District, Uganda. While in Uganda, the teachers worked in partnership with the LCD Uganda team, headteachers, teachers and District Education Officers to improve schools and the quality of education they deliver.
Before going to Uganda the Global Teachers undertook two residential Training Weekends held at All Hallows College, Dublin in preparation for their placement in Kamwenge. Over the two weekends in April and June, the 8 Global Teachers underwent LCD's Global Teacher pre-placement training in order to thoroughly preapre for the experience of being a Global Teacher. The training focused on team building, introduced the group to the work of LCD in Ireland and Uganda and also included inputs from former Global Teachers who shared their experiences of being a Global Teacher.
Once they settled back into Ireland after their placement, they met up again in September to take part in a post-placement debriefing day. They shared their experiences with each other and also began to make concrete plans about how they will use their experience in Africa to bring development education alive in their own classrooms.
