Global Action Week for Education launched!
LCD Ireland Programme Director, Cathal O'Keefe, attended the launch of the Global Action Week for Education in Leinster House on 20th April 2010. Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, reaffirmed the Irish government's commitment to maintain education funding at its current level in the overall Irish Aid budget. LCD Ireland is a member of the Irish Coalition for the Global Campaign for Education, which is part of a global civil society movement that aims to end inequality in global education. The main focus of this campaign is to raise awareness and to hold governments to their commitments to provision of quality education for all. You can contribute to this movement by signing the 1 Goal: Education for All campaign.
Catapult yourself from Cairo to Cape Town, without leaving Ireland!
The Cairo to Cape Town Challenge kicked off on Friday 26th March, with over 22 schools embarking on an ambitious virtual journey from Cairo to Cape Town! Schools participated in fundraising activities such as sports’ days and no-uniform days. For every €10 raised, they progressed 10km along the route from Cairo to Cape Town, using the Interactive Map of Africa provided by LCD. Our flagship event was held in Rathdown Secondary School in County Dublin on the 26th March, and included drumming workshops and music by Niwel Tsumbu, Congolese/Irish musician. Thanks to Niwel, and Nuno Reis Goncalves, photographer, for celebrating with us.

Marathon enthusiast runs for Link Community Development! Congratulations to Ken Fitzmaurice who completed the Chris Hoy Half-Marathon on the 18th April in record time! Ken is now in training for his next feat; the British London 10k run, a marathon which even Olympic gold-medallist Steve Redgrave admitted proved 'challenging'. He will also run the Robin Hood half-marathon in September. Thank you very much to Ken for running these major races in aid of Link Community Development. You can support Ken on his mycharity page.

As of September 2009, LCD Ireland has a new supporter in the business community. iBuyVouchers.ie, a clever new loyalty card scheme for hundreds of businesses around Ireland has chosen LCD to become one of its two Dublin beneficiary charities. Each loyalty card, which costs just €3, offers discounts, special offers and other great bargains in hundreds of retail locations. LCD Ireland Programme Director visits Ethiopia
Cathal O’Keeffe, LCD Ireland’s Programme Director, was hosted by LCD Ethiopia in March 2009. He met with LCD staff in Wolaitia Zone, 250 kms southeast of Addis Ababa. LCD Ethiopia is working with the local department of education to implement LCD Ethiopia’s Woreda School Improvement Programme, which over 3 years, will reach improve the quality of education for over 100,000 children. Cathal met with local department of education staff, who were very excited about LCD’s intervention and felt that it will make a real impact on the quality of education for children.
Eight Global Teachers go to Uganda!
Eight Irish teachers were recruited to the 2009 Global Teachers Programme. They attend two training weekends hosted by LCD Ireland where they met the 2008 Global Teachers, who presented the follow-up work they have done in Irish schools since returning from Uganda.
New programme staff recruited
LCD Ireland is pleased to welcome on board Kevin McParland, who took up his position in February. Kevin will be responsible for looking after teachers and schools participating in the Link Schools Programme and Global Teachers Programme. In the coming months, as well as preparing the new Global Teachers for their time in Uganda, Kevin will also be helping LSP schools with their activities and communication with their partner schools in Africa.
LCD Ireland strategic planning under way
After an initial phase of growth following LCD Ireland’s establishment in 2006, a decision was taken by the LCD Ireland board in 2008 to embark on a process of strategic planning. This will result in a 3-5 year strategic plan for LCD Ireland. The process commenced in October 2008, facilitated by a member of LCD Scotland’s board. The focus since January 2009, has been on fundraising. The strategic plan will be finalised in the coming months.
LCD Ireland leads on development of LCD’s Healthy Schools Programme
Following a period of intensive research undertaken by the LCD Ireland Programme Director in Kamwenge, Uganda in 2008, LCD Ireland has been developing a Healthy Schools Programme. The pilot phase of this programme will be undertaken by a VSO volunteer who will work with LCD Uganda on the development and implementation of Healthy School Plans in schools in Kamwenge.
