LCD works in five African countries to improve access to quality education. We also work in Europe and the United States to raise awareness of development issues. |
Our starting point is to develop close partnerships with education departments so our work not only improves schools now, but by influencing educational policy, can bring about long term changes in the education system. Our projects achieve sustainable changes by impacting simultaneously at all levels of the system, from individual school communities, through district education offices to regional and national policy-makers.
LCD's core work involves detailed engagement with all schools in selected districts. We document and disseminate our findings to influence wider government policy. We are committed to sharing best practice and innovation across our group, with partners and internationally. Our approach places us at the cutting edge of educational development thinking and implementation. We also undertake contract and partnership work based on our expertise.

The schools we work with face diverse challenges. Our focus areas include:
School Performance Review: This cycle of participatory school monitoring and planning underpins all our work and empowers stakeholders to actively engage in educational decision-making. Accurate data is gathered, analysed and shared to inform prioritization of improvement activities at all levels.

School Capacity Building: We implement a range of training modules and mentoring schemes to improve school effectiveness. These include Head Teacher/Principal Leadership, Teacher Professional Development, Literacy and PTA Governance. We also facilitate special projects to support literacy, and are developing projects to support solar powered internet and health. Solar connect is our latest initiative to bring solar powered internet facilities to rural schools.
HIV/AIDS: We help communities, schools and district departments of education to plan for and manage the impact of HIV/AIDS. Read more about our HIV/AIDS work....
Community Participation: Parents and local people are encouraged to engage in assessing school strengths and weaknesses, setting targets and implementing / reviewing improvement plans. Partners in Development: LCD aims to build awareness of important global issues such as better quality education for all, providing opportunities to bring a global dimension to teaching and learning, enriching the curriculum, and building support for development.
We do this through the Link Schools Programme bringing schools from Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa and Uganda, and the England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the USA together to work in partnership and friendship to learn from one another and to support quality education – as partners in development.
The Global Teachers Programme involves teachers in Ireland and Scotland undertaking placements in African schools. In doing so, they contribute to the development of the placement schools while gaining a valuable professional learning experience, which supports them to develop a global citizenship approach in their own schools.
