LCD Malawi About us

Our vision is a world where all children have access to high quality education.  In order to realise that vision we work in partnership with other members of the LCD group to develop and deliver innovative projects that promote access to quality education in Malawi.

LCD Malawi works in Dedza and Mulanje districts to develop policy and improve schools through a systemic approach to whole school and whole district development.

“LCD is in the process of establishing itself as one of the leading innovators in primary education in Malawi”
                                                                                    Dedza District Education Manager

What’s our approach?

In line with LCD Group Strategy, LCD Malawi has adopted a two-district model.  In order to develop and deliver high-quality school improvement programmes, we work intensively with schools and district staff in just two districts.  We then share successful programmes and models at national level in order to influence national policy so the benefits can be felt nationwide.  In all its operations, LCD Malawi works in close partnership with government at school, district and national level.
Our history

LCD Malawi started its activities in January 2006, first in Dedza district before expanding to Mulanje district in February 2007. LCD Malawi is a registered member of the Council of Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi - CONGOMA - (2007) and the NGO Board of Malawi (2008). In November 2007, LCD signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Group of Malawian kidsWho benefits?
By working with the District Education Offices of Dedza and Mulanje, LCD directly impacts on all 360 schools and 280,000 learners in these districts.  But this is the starting point.  Ultimately, by using lesson learned in Dedza and Mulanje and by working in partnership with the Government of Malawi at a national level, we aim to impact on ALL schools and learners in Malawi.

What’s our legal status and who is on the Board?
At present, LCD Malawi’s legal status is as a subsidiary of LCD South Africa. However, work is underway to register LCD Malawi locally under the Trustees Incorporation Act.
LCD Malawi currently has four members of an Advisory Board:
·         Ms Alice Chin’goma (VSO)
·         Ms Ethel Mbisa (British High Commission)
·         Mr Pacharo Kayira (Ministry of Justice)
·         Mr Feston Kaupa (Executive Director, Natural Resources College)

How to find us?
The Dedza office is currently the head office for LCD Malawi and based within the District Education Office in Dedza. In Mulanje the office is 150m away from the District Office, behind the Mulanje prison. The Lilongwe Office is at the Lilongwe Rural East District Education Office in Area 3.
