Stories from the Malawi Bike Ride 2011

Find out more about our first ever Malawi Bike Ride...

The 33 participants of the 2011 Malawi Bike Riders have returned victorious from their challenge and are now eager to tell others about their adventures, through blogs and press, about what made it so special...

See rural Malawi the way the locals do – bike it!

'Malawi was the most amazing adventure of my life. A beautiful country with beautiful friendly people. The group I cycled with were great people who I bonded with immediately, and LINK supports a great cause. A truly amazing experience.' Davie Gowans

'A life changing cycle through Malawi, meeting wonderful people and seeing the work being undertaken by Link. Be prepared to be challenged - physically, mentally and emotionally. This is an experience I will never forget, undoubtedly the BEST experience of my life!' Carol King

"The bike ride is going better than we could have imagined. The team spirit has been amazing and people have been so enthusiastic from day 1. The project visits kicked it off perfectly so people could see what they were fundraising for and set the trip in context. The days of cycling have just got better and better and every day is a new challenge and there's a new high and personal challenge for people to overcome each step of the way. It's a great way for people to get a first hand insight into our work." Louise Stuart, Link Scotland

Day 3 of the cycle included a climb up to the Zomba Plateau of 1500m

'The group cycled up to Zomba Plateau which is 1500m higher than we started - and higher than Ben Nevis. What an achievement - so chuffed. At the end I had the best bottle of beer I have ever tasted! Davie Gowans

'What an achievement! I
couldn’t be happier. It feels so good! It’s the best day of my life.’ Therese Rodgers

The perfect route

'The route was well chosen for safety and variety of terrain, day one off road was enjoyable too'.

'I found the challenge to be at a perfect level. The regular stops made a big difference, it made each stage achievable. I was able to push myself harder when I felt I had the energy to do so'. Carina Ramos

The school project visits

'The Project visits were invaluable - you need to be able to see how money raised is being used and that it is making a difference'.

·           'It was amazing and humbling to be given such a warm and genuine welcome to the school and village. It was fantastic to see the work of the Mother Group and what a fantastic effect they have on the community’. Carina Ramos

-               'The money raised is for such an excellent charity. The work they do is valuable beyond my initial expectations.” Alison Meikle
