LCD Scotland   About us

Our vision is of a more equitable world.
Who we are
Link Community Development Scotland was set up in 2006 and shares the
Link Community Development mission to promote access to quality education in rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa from Scotland.

What we do
We aim to improve the lives of children and young people by improving access to and the quality of education in rural communities in
Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa and Uganda. We support the global commitment to improve basic education for all in sub-Saharan Africa.

How we do it
The greatest challenge is not getting children into school but ensuring they stay in school and benefit from a quality education that provides them with the skills they need to reach their full potential. With primary education available to all, pupil numbers have increased but without support for school management, teaching and learning, and community participation, the result is poor school performance, and low levels of pupil retention and attainment.

Our approach is to work in partnership at all levels of the education system to build existing capacity by:
  • Providing monitoring and assessment tools for schools and districts to measure school performance and to plan improvement;
  • Offering sustainable training and support for districts, schools, and communities;
  • Facilitating sharing of international expertise;
  • Using lessons learned from local level to inform national policy.
Our School Performance Review process is key to enhancing school improvement planning in the Dedza and Mulanje districts of Malawi. We work in partnership with the Malawian Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and are a member of the Technical Working Group for Basic Education. This enables us to use our experience at the rural district level to influence national policy.

Scotland and International Development
Our work helps Scotland to meet its commitment to fighting poverty in developing countries by supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and the educational development objectives of the Scotland Malawi Mutual Co-operation Agreement.

We help Scottish teachers to bring international education to life through our Link Schools and Global Teachers Programmes. We support the achievement of the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence; Scotland’s support of education for sustainable development policy and practice; the Scottish Human Rights Commission’s aim to raise awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; and the UK government’s development awareness agenda.
