A grant from the Scottish Executive for the Scotland Malawi School Improvement Project enabled us to start working here in Scotland. Successful delivery of planned activities in Malawi and in Scotland led to further funding from the Scottish Governmentfor the Malawi School Improvement Project and the Malawi Inclusive Education Project which aim to work in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to support sustainable school improvement in the Dedza and Mulanje districts of the country, with a focus on the education of girls and rural communities. We have around 40 Scottish schools working in partnership with schools in Malawi through the Link Schools Programme, and have started to recruit sponsors to support our work through School Sponsorship. Currently 56 teachers and Head Teachers have joined our Global Teachers Programme exchanging professional skills with teachers in Malawi, and sharing new skills and information about life in rural sub-Saharan Africa with young people in Scotland.
Ethiopia
Link Community Development Scotland currently has 5 Scottish schools linked with Ghanaian schools, and 3 School Sponsors continue to support the District Education Project in Ghana which aims to improve education in 300 schools in the Upper East and Ashanti regions of the country.
South Africa
We have been able to provide some support to 10 Scottish schools to maintain partnerships with rural schools in the Northern and Eastern Capes of the country, and to attract School Sponsors to support our projects to improve schools using a School Monitoring and Support Framework, to work with orphans and vulnerable children and to support schools with HIV and AIDS Action Planning in order to better support pupils and teachers infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
