The Global Teacher Experience
56 Scottish teachers took part in placements in Malawi from 2006 - 2009. Their experience continues to impact on education in Malawi and Scotland today.
In Malawi Global Teachers spent three weeks in schools in the Dedza district, working with and guided by Malawian headteachers and teachers to support the process of school improvement, particularly in the areas of school leadership and management, teaching and learning, and literacy and numeracy. Supported by Link Community Development, Primary Education Advisors and the District Education Managers, Global Teachers spent the final week of their placement working together to deliver training to all schools in a zone.
Global Teachers have worked with 56 Malawian schools. In 2009, in addition to providing support to 14 project schools, the group of 14 Global Teachers carried out training for teachers on teaching and learning, classroom management, assessment and record keeping, lesson preparation and planning, school leadership and management, and resource management.

The principles of good practice and sustainability drive the Global Teachers Programme, which is integrated within our partnership with the District Education Department to support rural school improvement.

Living and working within a rural community gives Global Teachers a unique insight into and understanding of village life in Malawi, and the issues impacting on access and quality in education. The personal and professional experience gained inspires Global Teachers to share lessons learned with pupils and teachers to develop global citizenship and improve teaching and learning in Scotland.
Since 2006, the group of 56 Global Teachers has carried out over 60 projects in Scottish schools and local authorities.
In October 2011 we celebrated Global Teachers' achievements with a professional development event which focused on embedding global citizenship in Scottish schools. It was a great opportunity for Global Teachers from all over Scotland to share success stories and inspire one another with ideas for continuing to use their Global Teacher experience to promote Global Citizenship.
