Link Community Development (LCD) is an international development organisation whose core work is improving the quality of education in Africa through teacher and headteacher training and district capacity building. LCD is very grateful to all donors who support us whether by making a general donation, sponsoring a school or taking part in the Link Schools Programme. A Special Project is a donation to a specific school or cluster of schools in Malawi to support LCD’s work to improve the quality of education.
Your support through a Special Project will help to make lasting changes in a school in Malawi in improving the pupil’s access to education, giving them a better chance in life.
Special Project Options
1. Support one female auxiliary teacher for a year.
In many schools in Malawi, less than 1/3 of teachers are women. By supporting a female auxiliary teacher for one year, you can:- Help to reduce pupil: teacher ratios, particularly in the lower standards where Pupil Teacher Ratios = 160:1.
- Increase the number of female teachers and therefore female role models in rural schools.

2. Provide a set of 100 Chichewa readers for lower primary
High pupil to teacher ratios in Malawi place pressure on resources in schools, which often means children have to share books, sometimes 1 book for 8 or 9 children.
By providing a set of 100 Chichewa language reading books for lower primary, where the pupil teacher ratios are often the highest you would encourage and help improve literacy skills at lower primary level in Malawi.

3. Construction of two permanent girls’ latrines
Access to sanitation at school for girls can have a great impact on their decision to stay in school. Improving performance levels of teachers at school will impact on the quality of teaching and learning pupils receive.
By supporting the construction of two permanent girls’ latrines in a school in Malawi you will improve sanitary facilities for girls, which research shows will have a measurable impact on girls retention and performance at school.

4.Train 6 teachers in literacy and numeracy or leadership and management for a year.
Data indicates that only 3% of Standard 4 (year 4) learners are competent in Maths and English.
Improving performance levels of teachers at school will impact on the quality of teaching and learning pupils receive.
