LCD's Programme in Uganda

LCD Uganda is today recognised as a leading NGO in the field of education. Our headquarters is within the Ministry of Education and Sports (Directorate of Education Standards). Through the Uganda Schools Improvement Programme (USIP) 2006-2010, we have continued to inform and support education policy development at a national level.

Improvement Activities -
Using a ‘whole district approach’, our work in the country has the following focal areas:

School Performance Review (SPR)
SPR is LCD’s unique selling point. The SPR process ensures that schools plan ahead and districts engage with schools during the planning process and actively support their development.

District
Capacity Building
LCD develops the capacity and provides support to the district education officials (Education Officers and school Inspectors) – helping them to provide a better service to schools. In Masindi and Buliisa District LCD is funding 11 School Development Officer posts – enabling these districts to bring support closer to school communities.

Head Teacher Management Training
LCD believes that ‘Behind a good school is a good Head Teacher’. LCD in conjunction with MoES & UPHOLD, developed the four core modules used in Head Teacher training covering the key areas of Leadership, Managing School Improvement, Financial Management and Curriculum Management

Literacy and Numeracy Training
LCD is supporting MoES’ New Thematic Curriculum which is focusing on improving children’s literacy and numeracy. LCD has conducted training in literacy for the early years teachers primary schools.

HIV/AIDS Action Planning
We assist schools to implement the new National Policy Guidelines on HIV/AIDS in Your School. – helping to make fight the epidemic and helping schools to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for HIV positive teachers and learners.

School Management Committee Training
According to the Education Act (2008) SMCs are statutory bodies responsible for the management of primary schools in Uganda. LCD is involved in building the capacity of SMCs.

Link Schools Programme (Masindi, Buliisa, Kamwenge, Nakaseke)
There are 106 schools in Masindi, Buliisa, Kamwenge and Nakaseke Districts that are linked with schools in UK and Ireland. Schools correspond, undertake joint projects and exchange visitors.

Global Teachers Programme (Kamwenge)
LCD has hosted Global Teachers originally from UK and presently from Ireland to Kamwenge. The teachers work in Uganda schools sharing skills and knowledge with their Ugandan counterparts.

Recognition of the LCD model:
LCD has received a steady stream of requests for consultancies from other NGOs including: Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) and Build Africa Uganda. Most recently the SPR model is being incorporated into the Ministry of Education and Sports’ Quality Enhancement Initiative focusing on 1,804 primary schools in the 12 least performing and most deserving Uganda districts with effect from 2009.
