Improving the quality of education in Africa

Audio Visual Materials for Social Change

In early 2014, Link Community Development Ethiopia worked with partner agency Whizz Kids Workshop to develop local language audio-visual materials exploring the barriers girls face to attending and achieving in school. A group of girls from all the project target areas were selected to write the scripts and receive basic training in film production. The topics include domestic chores, early marriage, status of girls' education, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and menstruation. The footage was shot on site in schools located in rural Wolaita Zone of south-western Ethiopia. The edited films include the footage alongside input from inspirational female role models. They were screened for the first time in May 2015 in rural communities using generators and projectors. The community campaigns were emotional affairs and the ensuing discussions were right at the heart of the attitudinal and behavioral changes needed to enable effective girls' education in the long term.

The Project

By providing training, support, encouragement and role models, we created the environment for girls to empower themselves by giving them the necessary skills and opportunities to make their on films on themes impacting their education and their lives.
"Involve me" features twelve selected girls from four woredas in Wolaita Zone, consulting and making one minute films on the six obstacles to their education: menstruation, reproductive health, domestic chores, early marriage, HIV and attitudes towards girls' education.
The hands-on, interactive process of writing, acting and filming their own one minute videos gave the girls confidence to become role models to all those who view their films and read these books.
In addition, the "watch me" segment features accomplished women from different sectors to give inspiration.

Please see below for the completed videos as directed by the selected girls from Wolaita Zone in Ethiopia.
